There are numerous industries in Puerto Rico, a great number of which are involved in the manufacturing and processing of sugar, food, and tobacco products. The tourism industry is also growing and creating employment for the large number of tourists that visit the island. Sugar mills are located in the interior of the island. They use many workers from the mainland United States and other countries such as Canada, India, and Mexico.

In terms of agriculture, alfalfa and rice are the number one crops. However, there are many crops grown in the Caribbean region such as coffee, citrus fruit, potatoes, peppers, tomatoes, tamarind, and a variety of fruits. These crops provide people with food and other agricultural produce in times of need. Puerto Rico has a number of factories that manufacture clothing, electronics, cement, sugar, and food. Puerto Rican's are very fortunate in the sense that they have free trade with all other countries in the economic sector.

Fishing is another industry that provides employment for a significant number of Puerto Rican's. This is because the waters off the island are rich in fish which serve as a staple food in times of need. Fishing supplies are sold to restaurants and food markets. Fishing is a significant income generator for the majority of the population on the island.

A number of small-scale manufacturing businesses have started in Puerto Rico. These businesses use local labor and produce goods that are then shipped across the country and around the world. A major portion of these manufacturing industries utilizes union labor which provides a better quality of life for its workers and better paying wages. As a result, Puerto Rico has become a major distribution point for clothing, toys, and appliances to the mainland US.

The San Juan Puerto Rican National University has recently conducted a study on the number of people living on the island as well as the number of tourists that come to visit. It found that almost 60% of the total population on the island is Hispanic. While the Caribbean islands of St. Thomas and St. Martin have similar populations, the numbers of Hispanic people in Puerto Rico are much higher. The University found that this high population of Hispanic individuals is one of the reasons that there is so much tourism revenue generated each year. This study indicates that there may be a correlation between the number of tourists who visit Puerto Rico and the growth of the population. This is because when tourists come to Puerto Rico to visit family they tend to cluster in a certain area, which leads to a greater concentration of Hispanic individuals.

The San Juan Puerto Rican National University study also indicates that there is a strong connection between the number of high school students who commute to college and the number of adults who work in the local Puerto Rican economy. As more high school students take advantage of scholarships available to college students in the US, there will be more adult workers in the local Puerto Rican economy. This means that there will be higher property tax rates and sales prices. The higher property tax rates and lower sales prices mean that Puerto Rico can raise its revenues by building up infrastructure throughout the island. Building roads, new housing, and upgrading infrastructure will not only help the economy but will also provide jobs to Puerto Rican individuals.
